What to do after an Accident

Getting in an accident is something that nobody wants to go through but sometimes it does happen and knowing exactly what to do and not to do in that situation will put you ahead.

First thing is to insure that you (and your passengers, if you have any) are safe and don’t require emergency medical attention. If you do call 911 immediately and wait for them to arrive. If not and if it’s safe to do so move your vehicle to a safer location so that nothing bad can further happen, but do NOT leave the scene.

Call the police. Even if the accident is minor it is important to call the police. The police create a legal record of the accident. This can be extremely helpful if the other party sues or if liability is challenged. Be polite and professional to everyone involved. It is important to NOT admit fault (even if you think it might be) or apologize.

Collect as much information as you can. This includes the names of the other drivers and passengers involved (and their contact information), license plate numbers, insurance information (company and policy number), the make and model of any other vehicles involved, location of the accident, name and badge number of the officer responding, and photo’s of the location and vehicles that are involved. If there are any witnesses be sure to collect their information as well.

As
your independent Insurance agent, NCPA Insurance Services will be able to help you decide if it is wise to file a claim and if it is we can give you all of the information that you will need to get that process started. Give us a call at (760) 720-9588.
